Sleek and elegant, the cedar waxwing is a fruit-eating bird that wanders through Virginia and the Carolinas. Naturalist Mark Catesby, some of whose books reside in the Colonial Williamsburg collections, first discovered and illustrated the species in the 18th century. A perfect pair is depicted here perched on a lotus leaf, long considered a sacred symbol of purity.
