Designed in 1929 by George crouch, the Typhoon’s birthing began from Edsel Ford, who was an avid speedboat racing enthusiast. After observing the performance of the well-known Teaser speedboat, Edsel Ford launched a plan to replicate the Teaser through the same shipyard that built it. Ford’s Teaser copy was named the Typhoon.

The Typhoon was fairly large, measuring in at about 40 feet. The Wright Typhoon Engine was 2000 cubic inches, obviously designed for racing. Edsel Ford primarily used this speedboat to commute between the Ford factory and his home in Lake St. Claire. Ford sold the Typhoon speedboat to Howard Hughes in 1941. Hughes kept it running during the years of WWII, and then sold it after the war.

After a series of various owners, the Typhoon speedboat ended up in Kentucky. Later in the sixties, the Typhoon’s owners had the ship transported from Kentucky to Seattle, Washington. Towards the end of the 1960s, at Bryants Marina, Washington, the boat docked beside the Typhoon burst into flame. The out of control inferno engulfed the precious Typhoon Speedboat and the racer was lost forever.
